Interlibrary Loan Questions

What is Interlibrary Loan (ILL)?

Interlibrary loan is a transaction in which the Marshall Public Library borrows materials directly from another library on behalf of a patron, or another library borrows materials from the Marshall Public Library on behalf of its patron.

Who can request ILLs?

Only people for whom Marshall Public Library is their HOME LIBRARY can request ILLs. This is your HOME library if you live within the city limits of Pocatello. If you live outside of the Pocatello city limits you may choose to make Marshall Public Library your HOME library by paying a yearly fee.

What can be borrowed?

Books, audio books, CDs, photocopies of magazine articles, etc. Some libraries will also lend videos and DVDs.

What information is needed to make a request?

  • Your name, current mailing address, and telephone number.
  • Your current Marshall Public Library card number (all 14 digits).
  • For books: author, title, date of publication and any other helpful information, such as where you heard about the book.
  • For magazines/articles: author, article title, periodical title; volume, number, date, and page of article, as well as the maximum cost you are willing to pay for photocopies.

Can I send a request through the Internet?

Interlibrary loan requests can be sent through the Internet. Call the library for more information and passwords, then go to firstsearch.oclc.org to complete your request. After entering the authorization and password, you will enter the OCLC database. Decide if you want to search only Idaho Libraries (LiLI Unlimited) or WorldCat, which is the drop-down menu. Click on the one you want.

Search until you find the item you want. If you see Marshall Public Library next to your choice, the library owns that item, and it can’t be requested through ILL. Notice that you may narrow your search by clicking on book or visual or other options.

When you have found the item you want, click on the ILL icon near the top of the page. Fill in the personal information, then click the gray submit button. The request then goes to the ILL system in the Library, and the ILL Department will complete your transaction.

How long does it take to receive the item?

Your request will be processed as soon as possible, and generally will be available within two weeks. We cannot, however, guarantee that we will be able to find the item you want or guarantee a delivery date.

How much does it cost?

You are able to request up to five interlibrary loans per week free of charge. Failure to pick up your interlibrary loan will result in a five dollar fee. All photocopy fees from the lending library will be your responsibility.

What if the item gets lost?

You are responsible for paying all costs of replacement.

What else do I need to know?

  • There is a limit of five requests per week.
  • You must use your own library card.
  • Your card must be free of fines and overdue items.
  • Check-out time is two (2) weeks with no renewals.
  • Libraries often won’t lend items that were published less than a year ago. You may recommend that the Library purchase these items for our collection by filling out a book suggestion card.
